Who God Is
---------------------------------------------------
Our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words:
Dear God,
Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her. You will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith.
We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith, and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.
Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch a addressed, 'To Meredith'...in an unfamiliar hand writing. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies'. Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:
Dear Meredith,
Abbey arrived safely in heaven.
Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you.
I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much.
By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love.
Love,
God

OM,
Alot of this kind of thing goes around but there must be something that starts it. No matter how real or how staged, whether it happened in physical or mental realms, truth resides in the “answer” I believe. It matches so closely my concept of what God might say to a child who lost their pet. So God did say it. Of course.
Deb
I wish a lot of grown up people could remember that last part:
“By the way, I’m easy to find, I am wherever there is love.”
No hoops, bells, whistles, achievements, apologies, credits, debits, prayers, priests, or pleas required. Thanks so much for sharing this lovely story.
I have received this message, too, more than once. It is so beautiful and true, OM! Yeah, God is there wherever love is!
Doesn’t matter is true or a fiction, the message is real… God is love… and Children and Dogs will always be His Angels… Thanks OM and much Love to you… Do you mind if I post a link to your blog on one of mine? Posted it here
Yep I agree, who cares if fact or fiction? It can inspire us to act in bolder more loving ways. It gives me hope in the world. We can all be love…. Thanks, OM.
Thank you all for the wonderful responses! You’re quite right, Mamakat, no hoops or priests required !!!!
Lili, I’m glad I could make a tiny contribution to your heartfelt blog about animals !!
I would love to see a world in which everyone treats everything/one with loving kindness, and from the largest spiritual viewpoint, I have to say that God is not JUST where the human emotion we call “love” is. God is also where hate is. God is also where indifference is. There is nothing that is not-God. The love that God has is big enough to contain everything that exists or happens or is felt or done. That’s REALLY BIG-time LOVE.
That love is inherent in our Being. It is a love “of” Being, we might say. When we are completely aligned with that, when we realize that, when we awaken to that Being-Love, that Infinite Love, then our human emotions and behavior tend gradually to move toward what we commonly call “love” or “loving,” and away from hate or indifference.
But we can’t choose just one side of a polarity, of opposites. In my church, we recommend people awaken to their True Nature AS Love, and then, downstream, a more loving-kind world emerges.
So, strictly speaking, I would have God say “I am wherever Love is. And I am whereever anything or anyone is. IAM Love. Love is not a verb, it is Who I Am. And who you are, too, when you realize that you and I are the same Being.”
Now that we’re theologically clear, back to this uplifting, inspiring, hope-giving, strengthening, encouraging story!!

All right OM, dang it! (I suppose this reveals my fundamentally squishy nature)
Just when I got to the part in your story about when the package arrives on the front porch, I started to cry with out knowing for sure what was going to happen but knowing that it was going to be something “good.”
thanks dear, that was really sweet.
love ya,
Michael
Yeah, I think I got choked up somewhere about there, too.
Love them “squishy” warriors!!
Hugs, OM
You know, I remember reading somewhere that there is a group of volunteers that answers letters to God sent in the mail. Not sure if it’s in the US, but it wouldn’t surprise me. Americans are fantastically generous. Perhaps I’ll google it to find out where these people work. I’d like to help out in that manner also if I could.
Hugs to you, OM and everyone here.
OM thank you for this blog, it is like a Christmas gift to me… “I am wherever Love is. And I am whereever anything or anyone is. I AM Love. Love is not a verb, it is Who I Am. And who you are, too, when you realize that you and I are the same Being.”
Blessings :)
Oh, Lili, that my words were a gift to you is a gift in return to me, as I love nothing more than being useful/helpful/a resource !!!!
Mascha, that wouldn’t surprise me either, now that you mention it.
And then along comes a poem from our own John D.,cultivator of the Empowered by Poetry. Group:
Be an Angel
You don’t have to die
To be an angel
You can be an angel
Right now
You don’t have to give up
The ghost
You can be an angelIn your flesh
You don’t have to leave here
To be an angel
You can be an angel
In your spirit
You don’t have to surrender
To be an angel

Late to the party again! Oh well! Very touching story, OM – made me tear up too. Also, loved these words of yours:
When we are completely aligned with that… Being-Love, that Infinite Love, then our human emotions and behavior tend gradually to move toward what we commonly call “love” or “loving,” and away from hate or indifference.
But we can’t choose just one side of a polarity, of opposites. In my church, we recommend people awaken to their True Nature AS Love, and then, downstream, a more loving-kind world emerges.
IMO, stories such as these bring tears to our eyes because on a very deep (and often subconscious) level we recognize that this REALLY BIG-time LOVE (or Divine Unconditional Love as I like to call it) is the most pure reflection of our True Nature. If our heart is open even just a tiny bit, we can’t help but feel this True Nature bubbling forth.
REALLY BIG-time LOVE and Happy New Year to you,
Mathew
Timing doesn’t matter, Mathew, but your wonderful comment does. Much appreciated !!
I think we tear up because the good feelings that arise are so RARE for us, we are actually weeping with the pain of the times we didn’t feel the good feelings, but it’s safe to feel the pain only when it’s (even temporarily) over. I’ve introspected about this “crying at happy times” thing, and that’s the closest I have come to an explanation.
And I totally resonate with all you said. Divine Unconditional Love is what I call “it” too !!!]
Thanks for the Love and New Year’s wishes. Back atcha!!
In the Love We Are,
OM

Your bookshelf is a great idea !!

Dear OM, I linked your blog with one of my dear friend's blog here
Thank you for this beautiful post and thank you to dear Asteri for the link..
Through my tears I can see the pure and real beauty of truth, yes love is always around and is everywhere as is God..
Such a wonderful and touching reminder of the great power of love, how animals, our pets are so deeply connected in a far greater way than we could ever imagine..
The letter floated all the way home..
Those bubbles of love we feel are part of the divinity in the great ocean of One…
Thank you OM..
I'm so glad you liked it, ange!
