Medical Views of the Bailout

Guest Blog. I got this via email from another friend in Washington state (hence the reference at the end.) I rarely pass along inspiration or humor from emails, we are all overwhelmed with same, but this is toooo clever to let go by. Hope you get some health-promoting, spirit-expanding laughs from this.

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is the opinion of the Medical Profession on the Financial Bail-Out Package just passed by the US Congress.

The allergists voted to scratch it, and the dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve, and the obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception.

The ophthalmologists considered the idea short-sighted; the pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the pediatricians said, 'Oh, Grow up!'

The psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, the radiologists could see right through it, and the surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the plastic surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter."

The podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the urologists felt the scheme wouldn't hold water.

The anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas; and the cardiologists didn't have the heart to say No.

In the end, the proctologists left the decision up to the people in Washington.

Hi OM:

Kinda funny, but please read on - Americans need to know that this is really not good for their health, and in the end (pardon the pun) they may be better off seeking out “alternative” medical care if they want to stay healthy, especially seniors.

In the end, the proctologists left the decision up to the people in Washington.”  A very apt way of putting it!  We all know what part of the anatomy the proctologists deal with, and from my reading about this (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?id=20601039&refer=columnist_mccaughey&sid=aLzfDxfbwhzs#
Ruin Your Health With the Obama Stimulus Plan: Betsy McCaughey)
seniors may be the ones getting the “shaft” on this deal:

Elderly Hardest Hit

Daschle says health-care reform “will not be pain free.” Seniors should be more accepting of the conditions that come with age instead of treating them. That means the elderly will bear the brunt.

Medicare now pays for treatments deemed safe and effective. The stimulus bill would change that and apply a cost- effectiveness standard set by the Federal Council 464).

The Federal Council is modeled after a U.K. board discussed in Daschle’s book**. This board approves or rejects treatments using a formula that divides the cost of the treatment by the number of years the patient is likely to benefit. Treatments for younger patients are more often approved than treatments for diseases that affect the elderly, such as osteoporosis.

In 2006, a U.K. health board decreed that elderly patients with macular degeneration had to wait until they went blind in one eye before they could get a costly new drug to save the other eye. It took almost three years of public protests before the board reversed its decision.

Hidden Provisions

If the Obama administration’s economic stimulus bill passes the Senate in its current form, seniors in the U.S. will face similar rationing. Defenders of the system say that individuals benefit in younger years and sacrifice later.”

Unfortunately, the public didn’t have much to say about this, and the medical part reflects the work of by Tom Daschle, until recently the nominee to head the Federal Human and Health Services Department, prescribed in his 2008 book**, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” .

Anyways, I think the link is intact (copy/paste it) - there’s much more than just the senior “proctology” treatment going on.  If you thought your health-care was a mess before, sorry to be the bearer of bad news on a Sunday morning, but this whole section of the bail-out bill has more horns on it than a rhyno-virus, and in the end (sorry, pun intended) will prove much more aggravating and debillitating to the health-care system in the US, and the people it’s supposed to be helping to heal.

Yes, I agree, Americans need to know these things, which the media generally don’t make us aware of.

In a free-market healthcare system (which has never really existed) there are people who for financial reasons cannot access certain kinds of healthcare, but there are no laws or regulations preventing the situation from changing, or preventing someone giving them access via charity, etc.

In our present system, getting more socialized all the time, there are actual laws making it illegal (a punishable crime) for some people to access some kinds of healthcare, under any kind of situation, no way out, and the only way to change it is to go through the process of changing a law or regulation.
Very cumbersome.

Blessings, OM Bastet
